Frances Richardson

The invitation and catalogue design for artist Frances Richardson’s exhibition ‘Playing Against Reason’ at the Corn Exchange Gallery, Edinburgh. Frances’ work uses intricate pencil illustration and simple sculptural forms to explore the themes of money and gambling. The illustrations are created from hundreds of ‘+’ and ‘–’ symbols representing gain and loss.

The invitation uses invisible security ink that, like a scratch card, needs a coin to reveal the details. Once revealed the text resembles pencil marks. The catalogue’s cover contains tipped-in removable coins to scratch and reveal the text inside. The cover stock and coin design are used to mirror the MDF and screws used in Frances’ minimalist sculpture.
